What Happened to Stargate Universe?

Stargate Universe.
What happened?

Well I wish I could say I didn't see it coming, but I did. Stargate Universe is dead and there's no chance of resurrection. With it the Stargate franchise has ended. Rather than let it sail into the sunset I'm going to pick it apart like our butchered Christmas Turkey when looking for parts to make a new years curry So if you'll indulge me let's see why:-

First of all, the production company was owned by MGM. MGM has been in financial trouble for years, cancelling production on James Bond and any number of other projects, including SG-1 and Atlantis. Looking for low cost, high income projects. Hence the SG-1 TV movies and suggested Atlantis movie. It's all because MGM didn't have the the money they needed.
Well not quite. MGM was in trouble when it commissioned Universe so there must have been the chance somewhere. SGU had a lot on its shoulders, it was pretty much carrying MGM's entire TV output. Which it turns out was a bad idea.

How about the Voyager problem. After twelve years the same creative team burns out, it needed fresh blood and ideas. Atlantis scraped by because it was a different beast. While it shared a lot of ideas with the original show there was a lot of fresh angles involved. In the end it was more action than comedy, opposed to SG-1 which was comedy over action. In spite of several flaws Atlantis was a good show.
That was part of it, but they did try to get around it by pulling a Voyager. Stranding the show in a distant part of the universe, with a dysfunctional crew and a unstable command structure. Sci-fi fans, well known for their laid back attitude and lack of anything resembling continuity knowledge completely missed that. Oh wait, no they didn't, and Science fiction fans are usually an intelligent and observant bunch. Idiots.

Finally Voyager wasn't the only show SGU stole ideas from. They took the overly moronic and soap Opera like "characters" from Battlestar Galactica, Hell they even stole the abbreviation. Originally it was SG-A and SG-1 with the hyphen involved All of a sudden it vanished. Along with the humour, wit and originality SG-1 had.
Back in the day SG-1 wasn't the best show on, but it was fun. They had a laugh and enjoyed themselves. What I hated about Battlestar was the lack of humour, no one had fun. It was too dark.

This is what killed the show in my opinion. The compete absence of anything resembling Stargate. If we wanted crappy soap opera like people doing things that not only morally repulse us, but drive us to drinking lighter fluid I'll stick to Battlestar. Universe was pointless and dull, there was nothing likeable from the characters. No goodness or promise. We have open rebellions, affaires, social isolation, wilful ignorance and an unwillingness to listen to other people's points of view.

I don't watch Science fiction to watch unlikeable people, I watch escapist fiction to escape from petty minded small people and hope that one day fools and madmen like those shown here are gone for good. The reason I accept outlandish successes from small specialised bands, like the SG-1 team, is that they work together. They compliment each others strengths and weakness and don't have to spend half an hour ranting about the heart of the cards or what not.

When you reinvent a series you can't just throw everything you had out of the window. with more than Ten years of backstory and building up a die hard fan base you don't just ignore them for the sake of a few ideas you think might work in a different show.

Stargate Universe was a failure, and should be ignored. I join my voice with the fans that want more Atlantis episodes.

Alright this seems to be picking up a lot of comments, after some thought I made a fairer overview of the show here:- http://mountainscrapbook.blogspot.com/2011/05/stargate-universe-continued.html

  1. I agree with you wanting to see more Atlantis episodes, or possibly a movie, but I oppose your cavalier attitude for SGU. In the beginning, SGU was like lousy, but SGU began to develop and got much better very quickly. SGU now has or had a fair sized and dedicated fan base.
If it was the money thing, oh well,,,, except SGU was making money and that don't make much sense. Also, I heard rummer that BBC nixed SGU (and other science fiction) for petty religious beliefs of some CEO. Very few will want to watch the new lineup devoid of science fiction. At any rate, a lot of fans are bummed out over no further episodes. SGU didn't die naturally,,, SGU was flat out murdered. That's what I think.

    1. I agree... they should aslo consider creating a movie so those of us who are trying to figure out what the hell that structure is in the middle of the universe that Dr. Suresh keeps talking about. Needless to say they need a movie to fill in those story gaps damnit.

  4. I enjoyed SGU - not just for the fact that there was little else on, it was a pretty good sci-fi show - and getting better. The whole time warp, colony thing was cool - what an idea. Now that it is gone, what's left? I guess we are stuck with idiocracy as our road map to the future? This generation has the computer - but not really as the computer isn't interesting to them, just the shit on it. I had the space program, Shuttle program, first pictures of planets that were worth a damn, and our first visits - now all the crap is considered and extra expense to our nation - just as watching good science fiction might waste extra neural power when you can watch the kardashians work their way through the NBA - she is cute in some way and looks like fun in the sac but...no one needs to give a shit.

  6. I join my voice to those that have a plural kind of mind. Atlantis is very nice to distract us and put some smiles in our faces ( I really love it). SG Universe is very interesting from a more intelectual point a view, about the real human reactions. It is a much more realistic kind of fiction, if you know what I mean. We are talking about two different aproaches. It is, in my opinion, pointless to compare them. I am just a foreigner guy that used to watch the SG series by internet (and I am not really shure that I'm making my self clear, My English is not so good) But what I really want to say is that all the SG series are interesting in their own way, and that I'm really sorry that they are over. 8. SG1 and SGA was like a dream, something to look foward to. SGU was not as fun, how ever it was still a Stargate show and being loyal to SG1 and SGA i continued to watch SGU, it was starting to get good, at least the Stargate was still alive, but now Stargate fans are starved for more and there is no one to feed us. If i ever became a millionare i would revive the Stargate one way or another, weither the original cast and/or writers and members want to join or not.

  9. I watched Universe with my developing children at home. For a short snap shot in time Mom, Dad, Two Daughters and son all were in front of the TV together. Sound familiar? My son and I watched all the SG's. Universe captured the attention of mom and my daughters also. We, as a family will look back with fond memories of Universe in a time when the family and family values were under attack. Yes, Even in Universe. And now I look forward to the cancellation of the drama drama drama shows of today. We have to have instant gratification now. We need it remodeled, restored, repainted, rebuilt, reinvented, devorce, remarry and RIGHT NOW. Father and son sueing each other or ten of our daughters standing in line for one self absorbed bachelor. Not one of my daughters. What was it we called that kind of compensation for services? Well with the down trend in the family circle so it is with our viewing preferences and our state of the union. Thanks and only the Best. AGE QOUD AGIS

  10. I hate it when crap like this happens. SGU was a awesome series and still can be, which i can't really say for all those other crappy teen drama vampire or supernatural related shows they replaced SGU with. yes i get the whole hey we can't make slightly less for having less veiwers because 12,000 is a "HUGE" dent in these multi million doller programs... obviously i'm being sarcastic. sify has been taken over by little girls and vampire weirdos, what space related series is left, its all earth bound fantasy crap. Taking the entertained science fiction comunity and replacing it with insecure preteen entertainment. Another example of how were going extinct as a species. we'd all rather stroke ourselves to fake relationships then be facinated with exploration and intellegnce, that even the most ridiculus concept has atleast some real life possibility through science. not gay ass "magic" ohhh sparkles and waves of hands that require no skill or prowess just stupidity and luck. look at harry potter, is obvious you can be the best wizard in town as long as you can point your stick harder then the next guy...

  11. I don't have much time to watch T.V. these days... studying for exams and getting to know my new family. I have two new step children ages 10 and 13 who take up most of our (my wife and I)spare time. It's takes a lot for a show to capture my attention, and after watching the first two episodes of SGU on Netflix, I just had to have another. I liked most of the characters. I guess I see their struggles in my own life. I once was a leader in the military and then in a few public saftey roles in Chicago. I then went into technology and I love that as well. I think I'm becoming a nerd because I sometimes side with Rush, and then the military mind in me takes the side of Colonel Young as he struggles to look out for the welfare of everyone on the ship. Anyway I was disappointed when I found out there wasn't going to be a season 3. In my opinion SGU was a really good show. Hated to see it end the way it did :-(
